A Review: 'The Brit' by Jodi Ellen Malpas

The Review
A fantastic book! I found myself empathetic towards some
characters, the good and the bad ones, as well as loathing others. To me, a
good book is characterised by one that makes you feel something, be that anger
or love or if it uncomfortably stirs your stomach.
This book deals with a lot of heavy topics and themes but is
well-written. There are moments where it felt a bit too blase with the approach
to these heavy topics, but the nature in which the characters interacted with
one another made up for these and worked well to restore the proper mood. The
relationship between Danny and Rose is one that grew steadily, without diving
into the deep end too hastily, this was a good thing because I do so detest
when there is no buildup. There was also an intimate, unexplored tension which
made me giddy!
I am not too satisfied with Danny's decision regarding his
legacy but, in true spoiler fashion, all things must come to an end. it would
have been great to see a morally grey character who is comfortable in that
role, but I do understand his decision. Furthermore, there were some awkward
uses of language throughout the book. In moments of melancholy, there would be
uses of language which didn't fit well. For example, "my sons' ass"
when referring to a newborn baby or "I lowered my ass onto the sand"
during a peaceful moment. Now this may be to show the characters' lack of
education and the way they've been socialised but in other moments they seems
to have an emotional intelligence and know what word to use but in others do
not. There seems to be a bit of inconsistency there.
The ending? I think now is the perfect time to confess I
used up half a box of tissues trying to recover, it was a happy ending filled
with emotional turmoil and stress. I feel that the ending was a brilliant tie
to the whole story, it made up for the ups and downs we're subjected to
throughout the book. Roses reconnecting with two very important people at the
end was a cherry on top and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. The
connection between the two main characters was one I could feel radiating
through the words -- and even more so through the grief and drama which ensued
at the end.
Note: there are some heavy topics and graphic scenes, I recommend a 15+ age rating.
