The Review
A stunner of a book! This book is part emotional gut punch and part mafia rollercoaster, I can't decide which one made me lose my breath more! The book takes on a back-and-forth, skipping between timelines, format --but it is not too confusing and follows a single timeline in the second part (Chapters 8 to 36). Part of 'The Made' series, its story intertwines with other similar stories but all can be read as standalone stories, you need not read all the books to understand or grasp a single book -- they can all be read as a standalone.
Quite a jam-packed plotline but worth the rollercoaster! There was a fantastic balance of sarcasm and intimacy between the main characters, and it was so lovely to be able to see the development between the main characters and see them try to resist each other though clearly drawn to one another. They are described as having a magnetic pull or attraction, such a description leaves me feeling giddy! There was also a lot of emotional depth which seemed to be conveyed through one another eyes, this also showed a deeper connection which seemed to foster between the main characters.
At some point in, later, the novel the male lead had to compromise for the female lead which showed a glimpse of real character growth -- I really enjoyed that deeper connection which they explored.
Despite this, the novel's ending relied too heavily on a final connecting event, outward circumstance, to solidify the couple. The couple's emotional connection didn't feel central to the ending, which relied too much on external events.
Note: there are some heavy topics and graphic scenes, I recommend a 15+ age rating.
Favourite Quotes
"When you're obsessed with something for so long and finally obtain it? It feels like coming home to God. And nobody gives up their fucking spot in Heaven."
This is from Chapter 27 of 36, from the male lead's point of view as he looks at the female lead whom he confesses, to himself, to being irrevocably taken by her. The analogy to god makes it all the more romantic, as though it were fate or heaven sent. Meant to be.
"The sad part of it all was I only knew from TV this want how it was supposed to be."
This comes from the female lead's point of view as she reminisces about a part of her life and her relationship with someone. She admits a lack of knowledge and shows vulnerability in saying the only way she knew this relationship was not right or respectful was through what she had learnt on TV. This line really felt impactful -- it screams her loneliness without needing to shout. This line showed, in a not-too-direct manner, the state of the female lead.
